Marching color guard began in the military. Each unit used to bring a drummer and piper along in order to play music to boost the soldiers spirits and to keep the unit marching in step. Along with the drummers and pipers, people were recruited to carry a flag displaying the American flag and that unit’s colors. They did this in order to express their pride, and also to keep up with their soldiers. As the American military marching band evolved, people began to notice that although there was music to soothe the ears, there was nothing on the field to stimulate the visual senses. Thus, color guard was born. Because it evolved from the military, rifles and sabres were incorporated into the shows along with flags. As color guard evolved and came into its own, it began incorporating more aspects, such as dance, props, and novelties. Costumes began to get more and more elaborate and silks began to be used for more than just displaying pride. As it has evolved, it has become a popular, widespread, and respected sport.
